What do most people consider before getting a divorce?
The National Divorce Decision Making Project has been considering this question seriously with a recent research project designed to learn more about the thought processes people go through before deciding that divorce is the right decision for them.
They collected responses to several keys questions with more than 3,000 married individuals in the U.S. sharing their thoughts. Respondents provided in-depth answers to a handful of questions on the phone to help research project managers determine the critical factors most likely to influence someone to divorce versus encourage that person to stay in their marriage.
Some of the common answers might not necessarily surprise you. Adults were primarily concerned with children, happiness, money, and love. These four factors came up again and again with different respondents.
Many parents were concerned about how a divorce could impact children emotionally, and this is why kids were the leading reason why someone might elect to stay in a relationship that they otherwise found unsatisfactory. Happiness played out in a few ways, including the spouse’s state of mind and how other factors in a person’s life contributed to their overall happiness or lack of it.
Money was, not shockingly, a big factor, too. Finances often became critical as it related to whether or not the person thinking about leaving could afford to do so. According to the research team, love actually came up at the end of many of these phone interviews, and this discussion was usually more emotion-based than the conversations about the other three factors that emerged so prominently in this study.
